She's the perfect woman,
The perfect friend,
The perfect lover.
What I feel is beyond words.
Sweeter than any piece of candy,
More radiant than any sunrise,
She takes my breath away.
Suddenly, all changes.
Someone who forgets
That all people are people,
Leaves her unrecognizable.
Her beautiful smile, broken.
Her shining eyes, swollen.
Her freshened breath, soured.
Her, changed forever.
And I can't even be with her
To let her know I'm still there;
To let her know that I still care;
To let her know that every breath of air
Is painful.
For her.
For though we've been joined in soul
Since before our mothers knew of our existence,
The people who are caring for her
Think the same as those
Who put her here.

 : Slam poetry inspiration.Inspired by: "I Do" by Andrea Gibson. [link] I saw her perform this live at my college back in February, and I wrote this poem right after the performance. I just didn't publish it until now. And believe me, I believe every word. Why should people who have been together 50+ years be denied the right to say good-bye on the one person's death bed?
